Voyeurism Arrest
August 04, 2012

Capt. Ben V. Stamper (360) 344-9765

On 07/24/12, at about 12:55 PM, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detectives responded to the Old Fort Townsend State Park for a report of possible voyeurism. A 13 year old female, who was part of a church group, told the detectives that she had been using the park’s public restroom when she looked down and observed a hand holding a camera in a lower vent on the back wall of the toilet stall. She alerted an adult who responded to the restrooms and found a parks employee, later identified as 52 year old Robert Gonzalo, in a small maintenance room behind the stalls.

Gonzalo was interviewed by detectives on scene and he denied taking photographs or videos of anyone. Gonzalo told the detectives he had been conducting routine maintenance in the pump room behind the stalls. Detectives observed the wall vent to be missing several slats which could allow someone to video or photograph persons in the stall.

Based on the circumstances of the investigation detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for Gonzalo’s van, in which he lived. The search warrant was served on 08/03/12 in Gonzalo’s presence. Items seized included several cameras and flash media devices as well as a computer. All seized electronic items will be sent to the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory for analysis.

Later in the day on 08/03/12, Gonzalo voluntarily came to the Sheriff’s Office and met with detectives. Gonzalo admitted he took videos through the vent of the bathroom with a camera and that images were present on the electronic devices seized during the search warrant service.

Gonzalo was arrested for Voyeurism, a Class C Felony, and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He will be arraingned next week. The Sheriff’s investigation will continue as detectives attempt to identify and contact other potential victims.

Anyone having information about this incident is asked to contact detective Ryan Menday at 360-385-3831, Reference Case 12-5397
