Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 16,181. Its county seat is Fairfield, Iowa6.
Geography

it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,181 people, 6,649 households, and 4,281
families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km˛ (37/mi˛). There are 7,241
housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (17/mi˛). The racial makeup of the
county is 96.02% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,649 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female
householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 30.40% of all
households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who
is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average
family size is 2.93.
