The
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division provides
jail services for all law enforcement agencies in Jefferson
County. The jail facility was built in 1986 as part of the
Jefferson County Justice Center complex in Port Hadlock, Washington.
The facility was originally constructed to house 37 inmates,
but has since been expanded to house an additional 12 minimum
security inmates for a total of 49. The Justice Center complex
houses the facilities for the adult criminal justice system.
The jail handled approximately 1,240 bookings in calendar
year 2002.
Weekly programs offered the inmates include Community Service
Work (CSW), General Education Development (GED), Anger Management,
Family Planning and Parenting Skills, Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics
Anonymous (AA/NA), and Bible Study. These programs benefit
not only the inmates but the community as well. The jail provides
24 hour a day / 7 day a week access to inmates by clergy and
counsel by arrangement.
The
Corrections Division is under the direction of a commander.
The day to day supervision of the facility is under the direction
of two sergeants. Besides the Commander and Sergeants, the
total staffing of the Division includes 9 officers and 1 clerical
support person, along with a part-time cook.
The Jefferson
County Jail provides for incarceration of persons pre-trial
and post-trial. We also offer alternatives to jail incarceration.
The programs offered are a work release program, work crew
program, and an electronic home monitoring program. A day
jail/reporting program is under consideration.
In addition
to the above, our Jail Records section maintains criminal
history records and registers sex offenders. They handle all
billing for prisoner housing and medical reimbursements. The
Sheriff's Office is, through a contractual agreement with
the State of Washington, obtaining an Automated Fingerprint
Identification System (AFIS). This system allows a certified
technician to scan fingerprint cards and latent impressions
through in-state and Western Identification Network (WIN),
an interstate fingerprint data base, for identification purposes.
MISSION:
The mission
of the Jefferson County Jail is to efficiently and effectively
provide for the safety and security of the public, staff and
inmates with incarceration, correctional options and programs
through the application of professional, ethical and legal
standards.
