Michael D. Brasfield
was sworn in as Sheriff on January 2nd, 2003 and re-elected for a second term beginning in January 2007.
Sheriff
Brasfield has served in law enforcement since 1968, entering
the profession as a police officer with the Mercer Island
Police Department.
Sheriff
Brasfield joined the Seattle Police Department in 1969 and
saw service as a patrol officer and detective. He went on
to serve through all the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain,
Major and Assistant Chief.
During
his tenure with the Seattle Police Department, he also served
as the Commander of the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement
Training Academy.
Prior
to his retirement from the Seattle Police Department in 1995,
Sheriff Brasfield moved to Jefferson County. In the summer
of 1995 he was recruited to be the Chief of Police of the
800 employee Fort Lauderdale (Florida) Police Department.
He served in that capacity for over 6 years, returning to
his home in Jefferson County in October of 2001.
He was
elected Jefferson County Sheriff In the November 2002 general
election.
Sheriff
Brasfield, a University of Washington graduate, holds a bachelor's
degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the Police
Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for
Police.
He has
served on numerous professional and civic organizations, as
well as the International Association of Chiefs of Police,
and the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police.
