Deputy Donald W. Johnson of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will retire his commission on April 1, 2011, after 26 years of service to the citizens of Jefferson County. Deputy Don Johnson, known as "DJ" to his friends and family, started his career at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on April 1st, 1985.

During his tenure, Deputy Johnson has served under five elected Sheriffs; Sheriff Lee Smith, Sheriff Mel Melford, Sheriff Peter Piccini, Sheriff Michael Brasfield, and finally current Sheriff, Tony Hernandez.

During his 26 years, Deputy Johnson has served in many capacities and taken on numerous other additional responsibilities to include, West-End Deputy, Civil Deputy, Search and Rescue Coordinator, Firearms Instructor and Rangemaster, and Chief Armorer, to name a few.

Deputy Johnson’s constant and unfaltering attitude to serve the citizens of Jefferson County has led to over three dozen letters of thanks and appreciation from local citizens praising him during the commission of his duties as Deputy Sheriff. Don has also received numerous letters of commendation from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for excellence in the performance of his duties.

“DJ” plans on spending his retirement with his wife of 42 years, Donna, his son Louie, and his two grandchildren, and hopes to spend as much time as possible riding his motorcycle in warmer climates. For those of us that have had the pleasure to serve over the years with “DJ” Johnson, it has truly been an honor. We have all learned a great deal from him! We know he will enjoy his retirement!
