The current population of Jefferson County is approximately 26,000 - of which some 16,000 reside in unincorporated areas. Jefferson County has an area of 1815 square miles.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has 47 full-time positions, 12 reserve deputies, and 20 volunteers.

The Sheriff's Office budget for fiscal year 2006 was $3,086,424.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has a 150 year history. Henry C. Wilson was appointed as the first Sheriff in 1853. Sheriff Brasfield is the 34th individual to hold the office.
