FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HUMAN
SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND
September 2, 2004
The
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery
of human skeletal remains found by a 14 year old girl along the
beach, in the area of Glen Cove. They were discovered last Sunday
morning, August 29th, and appear to have been exposed due to recent
ground movement.
There does not appear to be any criminal matters associated with the find, and Sheriff’s Detective Joe Nole is working with Jamestown S’Klallam tribal specialists, a Forensic Anthropologist from King County, and the State Historic Preservation Office in Olympia during the course of his investigation.
The
scene circumstances appear to be consistent with a Native American
archaeological find. The remains appear very old, well in excess
of 50 years, and would fall outside the working cut-off time span
for forensic cases. The apparent flat wear pattern on the teeth
and the morphology of the cranium are suggestive of Native American
ancestry.
