FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mail
& Identity Theft Alert
January 22, 2004
On January 17, 2004 Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant at a Port Hadlock, WA, residence. Items recovered during the search included numerous pieces of mail stolen from several Port Hadlock, Chimacum, Cape George, and rural Port Townsend addresses. A 22-year-old male occupant of the residence was arrested in connection with the stolen mail.
Evidence suggested that the mail was stolen with the intent to obtain identity information, credit cards, and checks. Subsequent investigation found that the suspects may have activated the stolen credit cards by presenting themselves at the victim's residence as a stranded motorist. The suspect would then ask to use the phone to call for assistance, but actually activate the stolen credit card from the victim's own telephone.
This matter is currently under investigation and has been referred to the United States Postal Inspection Service. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Detective Nole at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, 360-385-3831, ext. 547.
