Transfer
of Prisoner Work Crew to Sheriff's Office
July
7, 2003
Responsibility for the Jefferson County inmate work crew, commonly referred to as the "Chain Gang", has been transferred from Jefferson County Juvenile Services to the Sheriff's Office effective July 1st. Much of the financing for the program, which utilizes trustees incarcerated at the County Jail, has been through grant monies provided by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
Ms.
Kelli King will continue to oversee the day-to-day operation
as Community Service Coordinator, under the direct supervision
of County Jail Superintendent Steve Richmond. As part of the
transfer of the program, new signage and vehicle graphics have
been ordered. The roadside signage will state "JCSO Work Crew" rather
than Chain Gang, and the vehicle will be modified to reflect
the fact that the program is now part of the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Mike Brasfield has indicated that although the primary efforts of the work crew will continue to be litter control along county roadways, Ms. King will be working with community groups to find ways to assist in special projects. Ms. King comes from a law enforcement family and is a long time resident of Jefferson County. She graduated from Chimacum High School and went on to serve 4 years in the U.S. Navy. She has been a county employee for over 3 years.
